RVing: A Healthy Travel Choice

Traveling by RV is a Great Way to Be Active and Lose Weight

OTTAWA, ON, August 8, 2007—As the summer enters its final full month, Go RVing wants to remind Canadians of the many health benefits associated with an RV vacation.

According to a Campfire Canvass survey conducted by Robert Hitlin Research Associates Inc., 70 per cent of RVers say they walk more when on RV trips than when they are at home.

“Anyone who has gone RVing will tell you that it entails a lot of positive activity,” says Go RVing Public Affairs Director Catherine Fortin LeFaivre.

“From walking around the campground to get some fire wood, to participating in the many outdoor activities that are usually available at RV parks—such as biking, kayaking, swimming and hiking—you are sure to burn a lot of extra calories while on your RV vacation.”

Another factor contributing to RVing’s health appeal is the ability for vacationers to control what they eat and choose more sensible foods, rather than having to rely on often higher calorie restaurant meals.

“Gaining weight is often a concern for vacationers—especially women,” said Fortin LeFaivre.
“When staying in hotels, you’ll have to eat most of your meals in restaurants, leaving you with little control over how your food is prepared and minimal knowledge of its nutritional content.”

On the other hand, when vacationing in an RV, a family can cook all meals in their own traveling kitchen and ensure that they stock just the right foods in the ample storage space included in the unit. Most RVs come with an oven, refrigerator, freezer, sink, microwave, and pantry.

Fortin LeFaivre said that’s why it comes as no surprise that weight loss clinics, such as Weight Watchers, endorse the RV lifestyle as a means to losing weight in a fun way. Weight Watchers recently ran an article on its website, www.weightwatchers.ca , about the health benefits of an RV vacation.

“RVing offers many benefits: it’s cost effective, it’s flexible, and it’s fun,” said Fortin LeFaivre. “To top that off, it’s also a vacation that will leave you feeling energized and healthy!”

The Go RVing coalition was formed in 1997, and consists of RV manufacturers, RV dealers and campground operators.  The coalition serves as the Canadian RV camping industry ambassador to provide the public and media with information about the benefits of RV travel.  The coalition also seeks to enhance consumer information and satisfaction with the RV experience.  For more information please visit www.GoRVing.ca .
