Author and Veteran RVer Writes About the Benefits of Winter RVing

OTTAWA, ON, December 21, 2007—As the temperature drops sharply and the snow begins to accumulate in all parts of the country, Canadians should know that winter can be a great time to go RVing. 

Joan van Dolder, an avid RVer and mother of four, has recently written a book titled, RVing with Kids Twelve Months a Year: The How-To Book of Family RVing. In her book, Van Dolder talks about all the great aspects of winter RVing.

Van Dolder said that until she discovered winter RVing, she used to dread winter. Now, she’s come to embrace this cold season because her family has such a great time taking winter RV trips.

“At home, my kids aren't outside as much as I like them to be,” said van Dolder, “but when we are winter RVing, and they have all that open space, they dress warmly in the morning and only come in the RV every once in a while to eat or to curl up with a hot chocolate.”

Van Dolder said that there are many benefits associated with winter RVing. For instance, you have access to a quieter environment because campsites aren’t as busy as in the summer; you can let your kids experience nature while also having the peace of mind of being able to watch them from close-by in the RV; and, it’s an inexpensive way to bond with the family while being active.

However, van Dolder said that you do have to take extra precautions when RVing in the winter, especially with kids. She suggested keeping the RV warm and cozy by turning on an electric heather and throwing down a rug on the floor. Also, she said Canadians should not attempt to RV when a blizzard is about to hit or in extremely cold temperatures, such as -30ºC. But with appropriate layers and preparations, she said her family enjoys RVing as long as the daytime high is at least -15ºC.

Wayne Robillard of Ottawa Camping Trailers agreed that winter camping is definitely doable and can be lots of fun. He said he see lots of his customers taking part in this activity. Robillard strongly advised, however, that those interested in winter RVing check with their local dealers first to see how suitable their unit is for the cold weather.

"I think winter RVing will take off once people realize how easy it is and how much the kids love it,” said van Dolder.  “Every year since we started winter camping, there have been a few more hardy souls who want to join us for a game of road hockey."

Van Dolder is set to officially release RVing with Kids Twelve Months a Year: The How-To Book of Family RVing in February.
