RV TO THE SUN
CANADIAN SNOWBIRDS DRIVE SOUTH!

Every Autumn, thousands of Canadians escape the chill of winter by driving south in their recreational vehicles (RV's).

These RV Snowbirds have discovered the best of both worlds. They enjoy the freedom of their travel trailers, motorhomes, and fifth wheel RV's in Canada during the Spring and Summer, then migrate like the birds to the sunny south for the winter.

For many RV owners, the annual trip to the sunbelt states is a voyage of discovery. Rather than dash south on the nearest interstate, the RV enthusiasts plan a tour of the scenic locations that lie between the snow and the sand. Snowbirds in the Eastern provinces generally head for Florida, Western Canadians choose destinations in Arizona, Texas, and California.

Driving six to ten hours per day, the Snowbirds take a leisurely route to the warmer weather. At this pace, there are many attractions to be enjoyed on the journey – points of interest that are often barely noticed by those on a tighter schedule.

There are many benefits to travelling in an RV, compared to the more conventional ways to escape winter. Campgrounds along the Snowbird routes offer overnight accommodation at rates significantly lower than motels, and fuel costs for the entire trip are generally lower than a single return airfare. You can travel at your own pace, enjoy the comfort of familiar accommodations, and take along as many friends as you like without adding to the cost of the trip. You can even take the family pet!

Many Canadian RV enthusiasts entertain friends all winter long. There's nothing like inviting the grandchildren to visit over Christmas – especially when your RV is parked just a few minutes away from Disney World! Visits from the family not only offer the younger generation a break from the expense of accommodation, they break the trip into shorter periods away from loved ones.

Once the holiday season has passed, the lure of the open road can be enjoyed to the fullest.
Snowbirds often establish a destination campground as their home base, and sally forth on side trips throughout their stay in the sunbelt. It is not unusual for Canadian RV enthusiasts to plan a "Grand Tour" of North America by heading south on a coastal route, spending the winter exploring the many points of interest between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and then touring North along the opposite coast prior to a Trans-Canada tour home. It's a wonderful way to enjoy the retirement years, and discover North America.

RV Snowbirds plan their winter getaways to avoid the first major snowfall, and return to enjoy the Spring season. In the past, trips were often scheduled to assure that Canada Pension and provincial medical coverage requirements were observed. These days, out of country medical coverage is arranged through independent plans. In general, the duration of the sojourn in the sunbelt averages just under four months.

For a retirement lifestyle that's active, enjoyable, and affordable, nothing beats the RV alternative. Take the first step on the road to adventure by visiting your local RV dealer, and this winter, you too can soak up the sun with Canada's RV Snowbirds.
