SUMMER LIVING
A NEW GENERATION OF RVS

What do you get when Dad wants to rent a cottage by the lake, the kids want a holiday at a resort and Mom wants to just get away from it all? No, you don't get a summer of discontent – you get an RV.

A recreational vehicle (RV) is the perfect solution for families who want the freedom of custom-designing their vacation. This mobile stress-buster can instantly transform from a fishing cabin to a chalet to a private guesthouse for visiting out-of-town family and friends. The sky – or rather – your imagination is the limit.

RVs are versatile – you can take them just about anywhere without sacrificing the comforts you've grown accustomed to in your own home. The type of RV you choose depends solely on your lifestyle. Models range from luxury travelling condos to fold-down tent campers and everything in between. There's even a new generation of RVs – lightweight, hardy hybrids that combine the best of a travel trailer with a tent camper.

Since its debut, the new hybrid is fast becoming a family favourite. These units feature a full travel trailer body with "wings" that extend out from either end of the trailer, opening into two full-size sleeping areas. The extension principle is the same as a camper (tent) trailer. To ensure easy handling and to keep the towing weight at a minimum, these sleeping extensions are constructed of durable fabric, complete with screened windows to maintain the airy feeling of a camper. When it's time to head out onto the road again, the extensions tuck neatly back into the trailer body.

Even with the extensions folded in, the comfort of the interior is not compromised. Many hybrid owners choose to set up camp with only one extension unfolded, effectively creating a private bedroom, while many single RVers prefer to bunk down on the convertible seating. With both extensions unfolded plus the additional bed conversions in the living area, hybrids can sleep up to six adults in comfort. Parents travelling with children find that having two sleeping extensions go a long way to promote peace and quiet. The kids can have their own room at one end of the trailer while the parents are tucked away in their private nook.

The body of the hybrids are made from the same rugged material and the amenities are similar to those of a travel trailer. Hybrids are outfitted with a kitchen complete with all the modern conveniences, a bathroom and dining/living area. Generous headroom and ingenious floorplans allow for plenty of comfortable "move around" space. Many of the luxury options found in the larger RVs can be installed in a hybrid.

The lightweight quality of the hybrid makes this an easy-towing RV. With a dry-weight of about 1,088 kilograms (weight varies depending on the size of model), a family van or other six-cylinder vehicles are rated for towing many of these models. Having a separate tow vehicle from the living quarters is a convenience that many families prefer. Once the RV is set up in a campground, the tow vehicle can be unhitched and used as a "runabout" touring car, perfect for day trips and family jaunts.

Like the other classes of RVs, hybrids come in a variety of lengths and floorplans guaranteed to appeal to just about anyone thinking of joining the RV camping lifestyle. There's one waiting for you, so don't succumb to the holiday blues – kick start your summer with a visit to a local RV dealer and put your life in motion.
