HITCH YOUR SPORT UTE TO A STAR! YOU MAY ALREADY OWN HALF OF THE IDEAL VACATION ALTERNATIVE! |
| With the trend in family cars encompassing more and more mid- and full-size sport utility vehicles (SUV's), the recreational vehicle lifestyle presents an exciting vacation alternative for millions of Canadian families. The new generation of lightweight towable RVs is designed to match the towing capabilities of the mid- to full-size six-cylinder SUV. Imagine the freedom you can enjoy, when your sport ute not only takes you anywhere you want to go, but invites you to stay as long as you like! You can find a range of recreational vehicles, from affordable fold-down camping trailers and lightweight travel trailers, up to elegant full-size trailers that can accommodate up to six people in comfort rivalling the traditional summer cottage. Every automobile manufacturer publishes a towing guide for their vehicles, showing the recommended trailer capacity, and the equipment required to safely tow a trailer within the terms of the vehicle warranty. Your RV dealer can help you select the perfect recreational vehicle for your needs, and install the correct hitch for your needs. The RV industry categorizes four types of hitches appropriate for the various types of trailers. A class I hitch, often referred to as a "bumper hitch" is a simple ball hitch with a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds and a hitch weight of 200 pounds. This hitch is generally used in conjunction with a small utility trailer, or a small boat trailer. The class II hitch uses a frame mounted to the chassis of your vehicle to increase towing capacity to 4,000 pounds, and hitch weight to 400 pounds. For most travel trailer applications, which fall in the 5,000 to 7,000 pound category, with hitch weights up to 700 pounds, the class III weight distributing hitch is recommended. This hitch design uses equalizer bars to lever some of the trailer tongue weight on to the front axle of the tow vehicle, enhancing the suspension and steering characteristics of the tow vehicle and trailer combination. Class IV equalizing hitches are used for larger travel trailers, up to 10,000 pounds, and class V equalizing hitches top out at about 14,000 pounds. Your RV dealer will help you outfit your SUV with the electronic trailer brake control unit, upgraded electrical system components, and engine and transmission cooling systems which are recommended for towing larger travel trailers.
