THE HASSLE-FREE SOLUTION TO BUYING A USED RV

RV (Recreational Vehicle) shows across North America have been packing in crowds of shoppers, even breaking some attendance records, according to show promoters. This trend is consistent with a recent University of Michigan study, which projects that over the next 10 years RV-owning households will increase by 15%. Sales figures for 2002 seem to confirm this as manufacturers built and shipped 21% more units than in the previous year. Currently, approximately 1.5 million households in Canada own a motorized or towable RV.

Families are flocking to RVing – many because of the cost benefits. A family of four can spend up to 70% less when travelling by RV according to a vacation cost comparison study by PKF Consulting. This is just one more reason that show organizers this year have been reporting record attendance.

But, not everyone can afford or wants a new RV and with the increase in new unit sales the good news is that there is a large pool of pre-owned RVs available. If you have your sights set on a pre-owned unit, though, you have to ask yourself – do you know a good buy when you see it?

Many folks find the prospect of buying a used car nerve wracking. Well then, consider the fact that if you purchase an RV privately youāll also have to be well versed in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, propane and structural systems. If youāre looking at a motorized unit youāll need that knowledge plus all the mechanical savvy that buying any automobile entails. This amount of expertise is generally beyond most purchasers, particularly first-time RV buyers. So whatās the solution? Itās simple. The RV dealer. Most dealers have a continuous turn-over of good used RVs on their lots, taken in as trades, and itās from this pool, with the dealerās help, that you will get the RV that suits you at a reasonable cost.

Many buyers are apprehensive about dealers, mistakenly thinking of them as ćused car salesmenä when, in fact, an RV dealer operates his business on a completely different plane, one that benefits the purchaser. The first thing to know about an RV dealer is that ćwhatās good for you is good for the dealerä. The fact is that an RV dealer earns more money by establishing a long-term relationship with clients.

Consider that RVs are specialized vehicles that need specific service, unique supplies and are often stored during the year. Providing these services are a dealerās real bread and butter – one they can only count on if they sell you the right RV at a fair price. So, rather than choose an RV by yourself – choose the right dealer. Find out how long they have been in business, how long they have carried their lines of RVs, how extensive are their shop facilities and their store front. What services do they offer; like winterizing, pickup and delivery, hitch installation, certified propane work, etc? Will they warranty a pre-owned RV, for how long and for which systems? Do they have emergency contacts and what hours do their service people keep? The dealer can also help with the financing of an RV which lets you make a deal on the spot. Lastly, and probably most importantly, is the dealer someone that you are comfortable with? Because, hopefully, itās someone youāll know for many years to come.
