THE GREAT CANADIAN WINTER GETAWAY

Every winter the clean, crisp cold air of our winter season rings with the sound of Canadians enjoying themselves in a snow-covered land. RVers are no exception.

A winter getaway is taking on a whole new meaning as more and more people are discovering that travelling in a recreational vehicle (RV), previously enjoyed during the other three seasons, is the perfect way to enjoy a winter interlude.

A rising number of manufacturers (especially our home-grown ones) are now building these hardy units to withstand a Canadian winter and, it has become commonplace to find furnaces and weather-proof insulation as a standard on many of the new units. All this combines to make the RV of today the perfect alternative to high-cost resort hotels.

RVs and families are a natural combination. In the privacy of their own home-on-wheels, kids are more relaxed with established routines and the familiar atmosphere. If things get a bit boisterous, parents don't have the extra worry about disturbing the people in the next room or forever nagging about "not touching".

An RV is like a second home and nothing has to be packed or unpacked before moving on to the next spot. Skiers are especially fond of their portable chalet – just drive to the nearest ski hill, park and get ready to hit the slopes. Most ski areas have large parking lots and, although, there may not be electric and water hookups, with advance notice, RVers are usually welcome to park and stay awhile.

Since most RVs have holding tanks for water and waste and can be outfitted for a generator to provide power, driving to a secluded area to enjoy the best trails for cross-country skiing poses no problems. The same with ice-fishing. It's just a matter of parking the RV and getting out the fishing gear. Many marinas which promote ice-fishing have parking areas suited for all sizes of RVs.

Snowmobiling is another winter activity gaining popularity with RVers. In the last year a number of models have been built with specially designed storage areas big enough to hold a snowmobile (or two, depending on the size of RV). Even without these new entries, hitching a snowmobile trailer to the back of a motorhome is effortless and an easy way to take your snow machine(s) to a pristine snow-covered field away from the crowds.

Taking an RV along on a winter getaway allows more freedom to roam and more versatility when planning a mini-holiday in the snow. With an RV there's never the worry of seeing a "no vacancy" sign nor the bother of trying to arrange a weekend or mid-week vacation schedule around hotel availability. With the exception of fuel (and possibly a small fee charged for parking
lot or winter campground use), expenses are minimal.

RVers also save on the costly expense of dining out. Common to each RV is a fully-equipped galley (kitchen) and meal preparation is as easy and as convenient as being in the kitchen back home. Meals can be as elaborate or as simple as you want and when and what you eat depends solely on your taste, not a menu limited to restaurant selection.

Canadians have long enjoyed a variety of winter activities and many pleasant memories have been relived over a steamy mug of frothy hot chocolate after a day of playing in the snow. Discover what thousands of Canadians already know – winters are better than ever when enjoyed the new old-fashioned way – RV style.
