Newfoundland and Labrador is Canada's most easterly province and has a small population (551,792 in 1996) spread over a huge land mass. Slightly more than half of the people make their homes in outport fishing villages strung along the rugged coastline. It is said Newfoundlanders live on, by, and from the sea. No place is more than 100 km from the ocean. The remainder live in cities and towns, the largest of which is the provincial capital of St. John's, on the island of Newfoundland.
