The name Ontario, from an Iroquoian word meaning "beautiful lake" or "beautiful water," is apt, since lakes and rivers occupy one-sixth of the province's total area. Two-thirds of the province lies under the Canadian Shield, which covers most of the north. To the south of the Shield lies southern Ontario, where agriculture and 90% of the population are concentrated. Toronto is Canada's largest city and the provincial capital of Ontario, however, the capital of Canada is in the city of Ottawa.
